Lake of the Ozarks - April 17, 2010
This event started out with a fantastic Fish Fry at Sunrise Bible Church in Sunrise Beach. Thanks to Terry Allen for the crappie, breading, "Terry's Special Sauce", Fries, Hush Puppy mix, and equipment. Thanks to Chris Jewett for demonstrating his fantastic fish cooking prowess, and lastly, thanks to all the team members who helped prepare this meal. Pastor Nick Stutesman gave an excellent inspirational message, as he always does when we meet at his church. There were 18 participants at the Friday night meeting.
Saturday morning greeted the 10 teams with 39 degree weather at take off, but the day soon turned into a beautiful one. Several states were represented by the teams - Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, and even some from Missouri. It was a good day's fishing - all teams had fish, and four of the ten teams had limits, making for an interesting weigh in.
Our Division Chaplain, partnered with his team mate, Randy Roustio, came out on top with a weight of 12.27 pounds, anchored by the big bass of the day at 3.69 pounds. They caught their fish in Indian Creek using jigs and Brush Hawgs. The days catch netted them First place in the Bonus Bucks as well, for a total payday of $747.50. Randy has fished every tournament, except the very first one six seasons ago, so this was a well deserved win.
A local team, Mike Padberg and Joe Terry, captured second place with a limit weighing in at 11.60 pounds. There fish were along the North Shore and in the Gravois Arm and were caught on Carolina Rigged Zoom Lizards and Chomper Eraser Jigs (Root Beer Green) on 15 pound fluorocarbon line. The fish caught on the Carolina Rig were in about 8' of water and the jig found them in about 2' to 3' feet. They took home second place money and second place in the Bonus Bucks for a total of $340.00. Finishing close behind them was the team that is no stranger to cashing Fishers of Men checks - Kevin and Bryan Jackson. They fished close to the Gravois Ramp threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Bass in that area, catching fish on jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and most likely Kevin’s Plum colored worm. They received 35.00 for finishing Third in the Bonus Bucks.
The team of Jeff Wilkins and Scotty Doolin captured the second Big Bass and earned $40.00.
Lastly, the "junk fish" honors went to the team of John Duncan and David Hegberg. They wrestled a 1.60 pound White Bass to the boat that was worth $60.00.
Chris Jewett, fishing without his partner, Terry Allen, managed to bring in four fish, finishing fourth, breaking "Team AJ's" dominance on this lake, including the divisions record stringer weight of 22.79 pounds and the Divisions Big Bass record of 6.57 pounds. Chris weighed in a decent 10.65 pounds. Who knows what may have been if the "A" of "AJ" was with him.
